Hi Laney

I'm so sorry to hear about your pain and suffering. I have a prolapsed disc L5/S1 and I did have a micro discectomy in May last year.

It's difficult to say whether an operation will help you as each individual case is unique. What I would say is that I'm no longer on the heavy medication that I was before the operation. I take cocodamol now and only if I need it. The operation hasn't completely solved the problem, I still have a smaller bulge pressing on my sciatic nerve and may have to face another operation but at the moment the pain is nowhere near as bad so I can manage.

If you have looked and tried all the other options then maybe an operation could help you. What I would say is find a surgeon with extensive experience in spinal surgery, go for micro rather than open surgery (your recovery will be quicker) and find a surgeon you feel you can trust. Talk everything through so you feel reassured.

An operation can get rid of the pain but if you have any numbness anywhere, there's no guarantees that the numbness will disappear (I've still got a numb left leg and foot with cramping).

I hope that has helped a little. Take care of yourself and keep in touch if you need to just rant or ask more questions.

Love n hugs
