Hi all heres my story hope it helps ..
My first prolapse was 10 years ago I had never had any probs with my back, I was a fitness instructor at that time, very fit and acitve. I had been running in the gym (as I always did) and had been fine, after my shower I went in to spasam it was pain like I had never felt and that was the start of it .. I saw chiropractors, had massages, pins, elecgtroted, physios the works until I finally went to a specialist and had my MRI. Luckily I had private health cover and things were done pretty quickly I was immediatley out of pain and back at work after 6 week's. 8 years later I started to get pain in my back again, I knew immediatley what it was and the pain just got worse and worse This time was so much worse I was on morphine patches, oral morph, diclafenic and was bed ridden for 3 1/2 months the doctors were shocking, one of my visits to A&E the doctor actually laughed at me as though I had just stubbed my toe!! I didnt have private health cover this time (stupidly) but as no one was listening to me when I told them I had a prolapse I paid for my own MRI. This prolapse was much bigger hence the increased pain, the consultant was going to put me on a NHS waiting list until I told him I would remortgage my house to have the op as soon as possible (think thats when he realised just how bad I was). He admitted me the day later to speed tings up however I had become very ill, lost a lot of weight and had picked up an infection and this delayed things as they wont touch your back if you have any type of infection. Needless to say I eventually had the op and again it has been a success (back at work after 7 week). That was 2 1/2 yrs ago and I am doing everything again now I am back in the gym but dont run as much, swim loads, take holiday's etc but I am much more careful as I dont think I could hack it again,
I dont know why I have had the prolapses but I think its due to sitting down (I drive a lot with my job) for long periods so I do my best to work round it, I use the train as much as poss as I can stand up and when I have to drive / fly I take lots of breaks and walk around. At home I hardly ever sit on the funiture I am lay on the floor typing this and it seems to help.
I have missed out loads of the miserable parts here and if you have any questions please ask away. But hopefully you will see that when all the crap is over you can get your life back .. and be PAIN FREE.
Love to you all, L

well it's 4 weeks post op, unfortunately I am in the same pain as I was before, but now have back pain and more numbness and pins and neadles, saw the surgeon today, I knew he knew it hadn’t worked by his manner and how quick he left the room as I was still in mid conversation when he left, I have to have 4 weeks PT then another scan and he said he will have to go back in if the pain remains.
Well he hasn’t got a cat in hells chance of touching me again, the PT has been great told me he can’t rid me of the pain but make me more mobile, and he answered all my questions with honesty which I wanted from the surgeon, which is also very conflicting to what the surgeon told me
So I guess I just have to see how things work ot, my kids are coming home today, not been home in 4 weeks as there was no way I could take care of Rhys because of his disabilities, so this will be a real test if I can manage
Will keep you informed of how things go

In the evening after my op the surgeon popped his head round the door he was stood behind be so was difficult to talk to him as I had my back to him while craning my neck round, I told him it was more painful than before, his reply was Oh that’s unfortunate, I asked him if it was successful, he said yes he cleaned it all out, then said fingers crossed it gets better, then said I will see you in two weeks as he shot through the door, have since been told his bedside manner is really bad, but when I had a private consultation with him he was a different person still waiting for appointment, and have a few chosen words for him when I go

Yes I had my op on Thursday, unfortunately my experience doesn’t echo yours, I am in more pain than what I went in with, I know its early days and I must be patient, and trying to do the exercises is excruciating, so it’s an understatement to say I’m really disappointed, I know everyone has a different experience, and I guess you were one of the lucky ones to not have the leg pain it’s really hard to walk takes a couple of hours to make my leg work then can get about, but when I have laid down for a short time, it then takes a couple of hours to make my leg work again, the tablets they sent home don’t agree with me so spent a lot of the time on the loo accompanied with stomach cramps, and to top it all the scar is about 4niches longer than the surgeon said I’m also allergic to the plasters they put over the wound. so my back it covered in itchy welts. Reading this back I can see the funny side, I really am a hopeless case
But I will stay positive, I will get there just going to take longer than I originally thought

I went to see him privately, but he wants to see me on Monday in His NHS clinic didn’t know off top of his head about NHS waiting list in private office, hence visit on Monday ,but I have his next available slot and promised it would be within 3 weeks, on the NHS,he told me he has done thousands of them ,and with me being fit and healthy albeit my back problem, it should be straight forward and I will be fine ,saw the MRI scan very large bulge and no way will ever right itself without the surgery, he was lovely and realised how long, and how much pain I am in, hence quickness
Thanks for all your support knowing you have been through same problems has educated me, and given me better understanding of it all, just can’t wait to get the date now
Take care

Was just wanting to get things in order at home post op, I am a single mum of 4 children one of whom has autism & tourette’s and is highly dependant on me, he is 13yrs, almost all his needs are met by me, bathing, dressing, can not go anywhere unaccompanied without an adult so has to be taken to school, clubs & picked up an so forth.…. what will I be restricted to do after the op? Will I need some help at home to help with my son, the house work and so on.

The man I am going to see is called Mr. North at Scarborough hospital, don’t know if he specializes in this kind of surgery, this I guess I will find out, have made inquiries on the net for private ops, been quoted around 7k and the nearest to me is Hull I live in a small fishing town called Filey on the North East Coast, just counting down the days till the 16th I’m 40 this month and was supposed to be going somewhere nice and sunny for a bit of R&R but like everything else it’s had to go on hold.
Bye for now

Finally got an appointment to see the surgeon on the 16th of this month, hoped it would be sooner as I am paying for the privilege. Tablets do take the edge off the pain and can get about, but they are not without side affects, don’t think I’ve had a good nights sleep in over 6 months ahhhhhhhhhhh! can you do everything you did before your op? The one thing I really miss is going for long walks and playing Golf, how long was your recover period ? I know everyone repairs at a different rate, but just a rough guide,
Will let you know what the surgeon has to say
Take care
Alison
