Hi, I'm Emma, I live with my 6 year old son in North Yorkshire. Iv been suffering with severe sciatica down the left leg due to a prolapsed disc for about a year now. The pain is constant and prevents me from normal activities such as long walks, driving, and most sports although mild swimming seems to be ok. Quality of life is grim and i think depression is finally setting in. Due to have surgery soon but there's a chance it wont be successful. My fingers are crossed! I'm currently taking quite a lot of painkillers and have been for a while. I'm quite worried what the long term effects of this might be. At 24 years old it seems so unfair. I have no idea how it happened, iv not been in any accidents or had any injuries, i guess it must be down to bad posture.

Hi Emma

I have had 2 ops for L5/S1, the first was 9 years ago and 6 wks after I was back at work and lived a totally normal life (running / walking / driving / holiday's / getting drunk ;-) / everything) for 8 years until it prolapsed again. I had a pretty tough time the second time around same as everyone else the pain the drugs depression BUT I had the op again I am now 2yrs on again I was soon back to normal ... NO PAIN immmideatly after the op!! I dont run much now bit do some, loads of swimming, back at work and have a life again.

Keep positive hun it does work most times and I know you think it can never end bit it can. My profile pic is me in Florida .. my 3rd trip to the USA this year ... 2yrs ago I couldnt sit for 10 seconds let alone a 10 hr flight!!

Have you a date for your op yet?

Hi Emma,
I have a prolapsed disc started in January, I was given painkillers and had some physio and 2 short sessions of acupuncture whilst waiting for an MRI scan which i had in May.

The MRI scan results showed severe prolapse and although given 3 options 1) Do nothing and risk further pain and nerve damage.
2) Injections which werent recomended as short term and 3) a total removal of disc and a trans-lumber interbody fusion (Pinning or screwing remaining lower discs)

I am now on the waiting list for the operation but like you have heard good and bad feedback on the operation and rehabilitation afterwards. I am only 39 but feel 89!!

Hi Emma,

I feel for you! How's your pain now? Have you heard anything about your Op yet?

If you've read my site, you'll know that I'm 41 and I've had 2 operations (L5/S1) now and several procedures done without and easing to my back. I had 2 Bilateral Sacral Injections on 31st July almost instantly my pain had gone, it's been great until a couple of weeks ago when the pain started again. So I'm waiting for another date to go back into Hospital for the same procedure again, hopefully this will last longer than the previous one. I'm keeping my fingers tightly crossed.

I've been really down and depressed about my back and my situation. I'm on stacks of strong painkillers Morphine 100mg daily, tramadol, amitriptlylin, fluoxetine some days I'm like a bloody zombie, I can't keep my eyes open. I'm still not back at work, I've been off for a year and 10 months now and I'm really struggling now financially, I'm dreading christmas I've got 2 children my son who's 17 and my daughter is 14 so you can imagine what they've asked for.

I hope you hear soon regarding your surgery.

Bye for now.

Hi Emma - thanks for the friend invite!

I had my Microdiscectomy operation in January and it was 100% successful!
In fact, really, the only recovery was from the actual wound and the residual effects of the nerve "bruising".
As soon as I came round the sciatica pain was gone and the relief was instantaneous!
Like you, up until then the pain was unbearable - in fact, a couple of weeks before the op the disc prolapsed even more and I could not walk more than 5 paces or even stand for more than a minute.
Not sure why you say it might not be successful - what is this based on.
Do agree posture can be a cause but also so many different people - thin, fat, tall ,short, old, young - get this problem it seems hard to pin it on one thing.
Keep in touch - I know exactly what you are going through and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Thanks for the friend request Emma, so sorry that you are in pain. My prolapsed discs are in my neck and i was told that they were definitely made worse by 20 years of desk work. So, with limited exercise options I am an expert on most of the balance games on Wii fit that my physio reccommended! Take careX
